Princess Sofia Trophy - Fifty countries represented at 35th edition of the `HRH Trofeo Princesa Sofia` Regatta |
PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN-(1-4-2004) Everything is on track for the celebration of the 35th edition of HRH Princess Sofia Trophy-Madrid 2012. The event has been presented this morning to the media. The dinghy sailing regatta will be held from 3 to 9 April and the cruiser event will be held from 22 to 25 April.
Over 600 boats representing 50 nations will participate in the Trophy despite the cancellation of the Mistral, 49er and Star classes. This year, exceptionally, the International Sailing Federation has modified the dates of some World Championships advancing them from May to April and therefore coinciding with the Trophy. This decision is due to the need to celebrate the selection events to assign the spots of the next Athens Olympics before 30 April.
The best Olympic classes World sailors will meet again in the Bay of Palma as well as prestigious cruiser crews.
Once again, this year's edition has the support of the city of Madrid as main sponsor within its candidature to organise the 2012 Olympics in which Palma would become the sailing venue.
This morning event has been attended by many Authorities, among which there were the Mayoress of Palma, Mrs Catalina Cirer, the General Sports Director of the Balearic Government, Mr José Luis Ballester, the president of the Balearic Sailing Federation, Mr Francisco Villalonga and the president of the Executive Committee, Mr Jaime Enseñat.
