How did Rolex use 904L Steel? Rolex has always had a tradition of researching the wear and tear on their watches over time. They found that their sports watches, like other traditional stainless steel watches, would corrode over time due to sweat and moisture.
The resistance of 904L to acids was the reason it was chosen for a new stainless steel. The greater surface hardness of 904L not only increased the resistance but also allowed the cases to be polished into a higher luster. Rolex also scans 904L with an electron microscopy for imperfections such as structural or surface defects. The steel is then re-melted under vacuum to remove any inclusions and purify the steel.
