U.S. Athlete injured in Greece returns home
PORTSMOUTH, RI-(27-8-2002) US Sailing Team - Athens 2002 Regatta
PORTSMOUTH, RI - After spending two weeks hospitalized in Greece, US Sailing Team member Kimberly Birkenfeld (Miami, Fla./Myrtle Creek, Ore.), has been transported via air ambulance back to her native Oregon. Birkenfeld, the number one ranked Women’s Windsurfer on the 2002 US Sailing Team, will continue her recovery at the Oregon Health and Science Hospital in Portland.

Athens - President Mrs Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, speaking at a press conference at the Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre, appeared pleased with the results from the first pre-Olympic Test Event. Referring to the event, she said:
“During the course of the regatta we tested in practice our transition from the planning stage to that of action. From this Test Event we gained lessons of critical importance for a series of operational areas of ATHENS 2004. Every such event will make us even better, allowing us to test in practice every activity concerning the Games. We are also gaining in self-confidence and in speed, as there are now only two years left before the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.”

Athens - Just one day before the end of the Pre-Olympic Sailing Test Event, the ‘golden’ twin Greek pair in the 470 class, Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa, has secured first place in the final standings. In the three races that took place today, the two champions held steady positions among the first ten competitors, which enabled them to maintain a comfortable lead over the rest.
