NZ Yngling crew pulls ahead 10 places to 5th in Olympic selection regatta

Kieler Woche - NZL: Team - NZ Yngling crew pulls ahead 10 places to 5th in Olympic selection regatta
KIEL, GERMANY-(27-6-2003) Day two of the Kiel Week regatta has drawn to a close with conditions preventing racing for all but two of the Olympic classes, the Lasers and the Ynglings. The Laser class have now sailed a total of 5 races which brought mixed results for the 3 NZL sailors competing in the fleet of over 150 boats. David Weaver finished 5th in the last race of the day which allowed him move 6 places up the leader board to 11th. Similarly Rod Dawson was on the up with his (7, 8) and is now in 17th place overall.

The gap has widened between the NZL Yngling crews with Sharon Ferris, Joanna White and Sara Winther moving up 10 places to 5th overall with (8, 7). The day didn't go quite so well for Alesha Thorpe, Karen Lambert and Michelle Vinsen who were disqualified from one of their races for being over the line at the start which attributed to their overall placing falling to 26th. Yachting New Zealand High Performance Manager Peter Lester was out on the Yngling course on the first day of the regatta and said that the regatta could still swing in either crew's favour, `In the first race Thorpe had a good start and went left, at one stage in the race she pulled ahead to 3rd finally dropping back two places to finish 5th...there's still a long way to go until this ones decided`. Stakes are high for these two Yngling crew as this regatta marks the first of a three regatta selection series for the Yngling class. The other two regattas in the series are the Yngling World Championships held in Spain, in September 2003 and the Yngling World Championships in Australia in February 2004.
