Athens 2003 Regatta - Paul Henderson: Agios Kosmas venue: a source of wealth for Greeks |
ATHENS, GREECE-(20-8-2003) International Sailing Federation president Paul Henderson expressed his complete satisfaction today with the Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre after a tour of the site and a meeting with Greek Minister of Culture Evangelos Venizelos and ATHENS 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki.
Just before embarking on the launch out to the racing area, Mr Henderson said: “The Olympic Sailing Centre at Agios Kosmas presents a unique opportunity for the Greek people, as they now have another access point to the sea. At Atlanta and Sidney the construction work was temporary. In Greece it is permanent and as a result these works are a source of wealth and constitute an important part of the country’s heritage for the Greeks”.
The statements made by the General Secretary for Sport, Nikos Exarchos and Hellenic Yachting Federation President Antonis Dimitrakopoulos were in the same vein.
Mr. Exarchos expressed his satisfaction both with the venue and the “words of praise from foreigners”. He commented: “All the key people involved, from athletes and their coaches to the officials of the International Sailing Federation have stated quite emphatically that they have not come across such a high-class venue in Sport Events before”.
This was also the view of Mr. Antonis Dimitrakopoulos. “These are the best facilities available at the moment in the world. As regard to the Sport Event, the ATHENS 2004 Organising Committee worked marvelously well with the Hellenic Yachting Federation”.
