| CADIZ, SPAIN-(14-9-2003) After the breezy wind conditions yesterday when competitors
were postponed due to too much wind, today was the opposite and the Europe
and Yngling classes were held ashore as the wind failed to materialise at
the ISAF World Sailing Championships.
Racing eventually got underway in the afternoon in sea breeze conditions and
two races were completed in both the Europe and Yngling fleets.
After a successful Pre-Olympic event, Olympic gold medallist Shirley
Robertson did not have the best start to the championship. The first race in
the Yngling class was started in six knots of breeze and Robertson, sailing
with Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb, finished the first day in 30th position
overall. Fellow GBR sailors Cathy Foster, Jane Norris and Annie Lush scored
two results in the top twenty to be placed 24th overall after the first day.
Americans Jody Swanson, Cory Sert and Elizabeth Krat took an early lead in
the class from Dorte O Jensen, Helle Jespersen and Rachel Kiel from Denmark.
The final day of qualifying took place in the Europe class and in the
lighter conditions Siren Sundby of Norway had the advantage. Scoring a
second and a third she is leading the class going into the lay day tomorrow
and then the final series, which gets underway on Tuesday.
Laura Baldwin is currently leading the British charge in the Europe class
and is lying in 49th place overall.
Today also saw the Stars and Mistrals leave the dock for their practice race
and their championships will get underway tomorrow as will measurement for
the Tornado, 49er, Laser and 470 men and women's classes.
