BAY OF CADIZ, SPAIN-(18-9-2003) The disqualification has been a notable occurence in the eighth day of competition, especially in the Europe Class and in their final at that. The Bronze medal which in principle was for the Czech Lenka Smidova, has now fallen into the hands of Mary Gaillard, the number 16 in the world ranking.
Siren Sundby (NOR) is world champion in the Europe, and has enough points accumulated despite not competing today.
Alter the second qualification day in the Finn, the spanish team have had a happy day with Rafael Trujillo who is in second position. The first place goes to Danish competitor Jonas Hoegh-Christensen. Ben Ainslie is in third place. The number one in the world rankings is Sebastien (BEL) who has not entered into the top three and is in fourth place provisionally.
The first final round day for the Yngling Class has been hard fought today, considering that the top of the rankings in the world were competing. The first place has gone to the crew skippered by Hannah Swett (USA). The number two team in the world rankings is skippered by Ulrike Schuemann, in second position. The Germans have also taken third position in the crew with Kristin Wagner.
The Tornado and 49er competitors have suffered the consequences of gusts of wind, concretely several boats overturned and underwent breakage in their sails. Even so, the competition has been very beautiful and it has also provided a good time for all to enjoy. In theTornado class, the Australians (Bundock and Forbes) are in head, followed by the French (Guichard and Espagnon) and the British (McMillan and Bulkeley), whereas in 49er the Sibello brothers obtain the first position for Italy, the Brazilian Fonseca and Linck Du second one, and the British Draper and Hiscocks, the number two of the world-wide ranking, become third.
The national teams have had a good opening, with the twelfth position ofobtained by the Galicia crew captained by Fernando Echavarri in Tornado class, and the Sevillians led by Santiago Lopez became seventh.
Finally, the Star class has undertaken a single test in the day, with which the Italians have lowered to the ninth position moving away so far from the medals. Percy´s English team repeats number one, like the French captained by Rohart, whereas the present leaders of the world-wide ranking, the Swedish commanded by Lööf are located in the third position. The national teams stay in the same positions as yesterday (31st and 38th ).
Today in Elcano the Laser Class held its first qualification day, and after 2 races the leader is Gustavo Lima (POR). The first provisional results gave first place to Donald White (KEN), however after an adjustment the confusion was cleared up and he was placed in another group where he occupies 172nd place. The second position goes to Scheidt (BRA) and the third to the Turk Ali Kemal. Despite the small confusion the day continued as normal in Cadiz.
In Rota, this morning the sailors set out on the water at a little before 11:00 to Stara their first race of the 470. The climatic conditions today were perfect for the first 2 races of the first qualification day for the 470’s.
Group C of the 470 Class were the only group to have their first race at 12:46 after a postponement due to the strong wind.
The provisional result for the 470 W after two races puts Sofia Bekatorou & Emilia Tsoulfa (GRE), followed by Lisa Westerhof y Margriet Matthijsse (NED), and Ingrid Petitjean y Nadege Douroux (FRA).
The provisional positions for the 470 Men is as follows: Zandona y Trani (ITA) leading, followed by Koreans Daeyoung Kim y Sungahn Jung, and the Australian pair of Mathew Belcher & Daniel Belcher.
The sailors have had a fantastic day weather wise for their first day of races.
