| SINGAPORE-(3-7-2005) The International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Executive Board (EB) held its first round of meetings this morning, in Singapore, in a week that will see the 117th IOC Session elect the Host City for the Games of the XXX Olympiad. On the agenda this morning were numerous points including the President’s report, reports to the EB from the Marketing Commission, the TV Rights & New Media Commission and a proposal for a new multi-functional centre at the IOC’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. The EB also discussed the Host City Contract for 2012 and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF)’s proposal not to announce the detail of the results of next Friday‘s vote on the Olympic programme.
Olympic Games Marketing In Good Shape
The EB received reports on the TOP VI Programme from Marketing Commission Chairman Gerhard Heiberg. The Chairman was delighted to report that the TOP VI Programme is the strongest programme to date, with 11 partners currently on board. Revenue for TOP VI is also expected to be up 31% from TOP V, which generated USD 603 million. Mr Heiberg also reported that the Organising Committee for the XX Olympic Winter Games – Torino 2006 (TOROC) had met its revenue target from marketing, while the Organising Committees for Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010 had already exceeded the revenue targets in their bid books for marketing.
TV Rights Negotiations
Mr Richard Carrión reported to the EB on the progress of discussions with broadcast networks in Australia for the 2010 and 2012 broadcast rights contract. Initial meetings have already taken place and, on 8 August, the interested parties will come to Lausanne to make presentations and submit their bids. These negotiations follow on from the successful negotiations in the US, Canadian and European markets. Other markets will be dealt with later in 2005 and during the course of 2006.
Host City Contract Approved
The EB today approved the Host City Contract for the Games of the XXX Olympiad. This is the contract that the winning city will sign on 6 July 2005 at the press conference that follows the Host City vote. The Host City Contract sets out the legal, commercial and financial rights and obligations of the IOC, the Host City and the NOC of the host country in relation to the Olympic Games.
No Results After Olympic Programme Vote
The EB decided to respect a request by ASOIF not to divulge the details of the number of votes cast for each sport by the IOC members. Therefore, only the overall outcome – whether or not the sport is included in the 2012 programme – will be announced.
List Of Athletes Approved For Athletes’ Commission Election in Turin
With Torino 2006 less than nine months away, the EB approved the list of candidates nominated by their NOCs for the election to the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission. Fifteen athletes have been nominated. The prospective candidates come from four continents and 15 different countries; there are six women, nine men, and six out of the seven winter sports are represented. The athletes that will stand for election in Turin are: Jacqui Cooper, Ruben Gonzalez, Georg Hackl, Mark Hatton, Kwang-Bae Kang, Saku Koivu, Janica Kostelic, Jaak Mae, Corinne Niogert, Kenji Ogiwara, Maria José Rienda, Becky Scott, Adne Sondral, Yang Yang and Pawel Zygmunt. There are two places up for election – the members finishing their terms are Jari Kurri and Adne Sondral.
Pernilla Wiberg Renominated to Ethics Commission
Pernilla Wiberg was reconfirmed as the Athletes’ Commission representative to the IOC Ethics Commission. She initially took over from Mrs Yaping Deng to complete the two years remaining in that term. Pernilla Wiberg will now serve a further four years.
New Multi-Functional Centre At IOC Headquarters
Finally, the EB approved the plans for a new multi-functional centre at the IOC’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. The new centre, which will include a new cafeteria, meeting rooms, increased storage space and press conference facilities, is budgeted to cost in the region of CHF 10.5 million. Work is expected to begin by the end of the year.
