PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN-(25-1-2006) The Organising Committee of the 37th Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia has modified
the Notice of Race to adapt the new Olympic Classes competition format
recently approved by ISAF.
Therefore, Olympic classes will start sailing a day earlier (9th April) and
up to 13th April to complete an 11 races series (16 for the 49er). On 14th
April, last day of competition - even if the 11 or 16 races have not been
sailed - the Grand Final will be sailed in which only the top 10 boats of
each class will participate. This change will not be applied to classes Star
and Yngling due to the clash with the cruiser regatta held at Real Club
Nautico de Palma. Star and Yngling will race the series from 10 to 13 April
and on 14 April they will sail the Grand Final.
Invited classes Dragon, Europe and 420 will sail the traditional format and
will sail from 10th to 14th April.
The new Olympic competition format approved by ISAF considers the regular
performance of sailors. During the races before the Grand Final there will
only be one discard. The Grand Final cannot be discarded.
The 37th Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia will be one of the first Spanish regattas
to apply the new competition format. The objective of the organizers is to
offer the best racing area in the preparation for the Quingdao 2008
Olympics.
The 37th edition of the regatta will be held from 6th to 9th April for
cruisers at Real Club Nautico de Palma and from 9th to 14th April for
Olympic and invited classes. Around 800 boats distributed in 14 classes are
expected. For most of them it is a Copa de Espaņa event and therefore, a
selection regatta for the Spanish sailing teams.
Club Nautic S'Arenal will be the venue of classes 470 men & women, Finn,
Tornado and 49er. Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa will be host to
classes Laser, Laser radial and Neil Pryde RS:X men & women while Dragon,
Star and Yngling will have their venue at Real Club Nautico de Palma.
Invited classes 420 and Europe will be based at Escuela de Vela Calanova.
The Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia is organized by the Federacion Balear de Vela
together with the Real Federacion Espaņola de Vela, Real Club Nautico de
Palma, Club Nautic S'Arenal, Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa and
Escuela de Vela Calanova.
