| OALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN-(3-4-2007) The 926 boats and 1.487 competitors that participate these days at the 38 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia – Mapfre had to wait again for the wind, which blew from S-SE between six and fifteen knots, to stabilize in the bay of Palma. The overcast sky with which the day started announced what was going to happen. In some of the eight racing areas the committees made several attempts to give starts but the wind drop and the important wind shifts resulted in invalid starts and new starting procedures.
Thanks to the professionalism of the committees races were finally sailed in all racing areas, although in some cases only one was sailed. In the races sailed today some of the top five world class sailors began to dominate. Results to be pointed out are the leadership of Marina Alabau, in Neil Pryde RS:X W, and brothers Federico Alonso/Arturo Alonso in 49er.
Titan battle in Laser Radial, with venue at Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa. In the only race sailed today, the victory was for Belgian sailor Evi van Acker, leader of the ISAF world sailing ranking lists tied with Mexican sailor Tania Elías Calles Wolf, in second place in the ISAF world sailing raking lists. Third position is for Sarah Blanck from Australia.
The Tornado class European championship held in Club Nàutic S’Arenal is at boiling point between Australian team Darren Bundock/Glenn Ashby and Austrian sailors Roman Hagara/Hans Peter Steinacher. Bundock/Ashby finished in first and second place in today’s races. The two leaders are tied with seven points difference over third classified team from Russia Andrey Kirilyuk/Valery Ushkov. Team from Galicia Fernando Echávarri/Antón Paz, in second position of the ISAF World sailing ranking lists, dropped one place and is eleventh.
The 116 boats of the 470 M in this 38 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía – Mapfre sailed two races today, with domination of Portuguese team Álvaro Marinho/Miguel Nunes, with two partial victories. Fifth classified team in the ISAF world sailing ranking lists, Dutch sailors Sven Coster/Kalle Coster, will not make things easy for them. They are at three point difference, together with Polish team Patryk Piasecki/Kacper Zieminski, that are third tied with the Coster brothers. There is a tight battle in the class with only three points difference between second an eighth classified.
Japanese sailors Ai Kondo/Naoko Kamata take the lead in 470 W after finishing fourth and first in today’s races. Second classified, at four points, is German team Stefanie Rothweiler/Vivien Kussatz while third place is for Lenka Smidova/Verónica Fenclova from the Czech Republic and fifth in the ISAF world sailing ranking lists.
Only one race was sailed today in the Finn class with venue at Club Nàutic S’Arenal. The winner was French sailor Lobert Jonathan followed by Daniel Birgmark from Sweden, fourth in the ISAF ranking list. Third place is for Russian sailor Eduard Skornayakov.
The 49ers sailed today their second and third race, except for the red group that could only sail one race. This race will be sailed tomorrow. With the result of this race missing to complete the series, the leaders are Peter Hansen/Soren Hansen from Denmark followed at only one point by Italian team Pietro Sibello/Gianfranco Sibello (second in the ISAF ranking list) and tied with Spanish team Federico Alonso/Arturo Alonso.
The Star class, based Club Nàutic S’Arenal, sailed another 2 races today with changeable winds. The class world number one of this class, Hamish Pepper/David Giles from New Zealand, leads the overall results with a second and eighth in today’s races. Second classified are French sailors Xavier Rohart/Pascal Rambeau at seven points and second in the ISAF ranking lists. Austrian team Hans Spitzauer/Christian Nehammer is third overall tied with the French team. Brazilian sailors Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada dropped down to fifth place overall.
The Neil Pryde RS:X, based at Escuela Nacional de Vela Calanova, sailed their first and only race today. The men results are led by Portuguese sailor Joao Rodrigues, fourth in the ISAF ranking list and Ukranian sailor Maksym Oberemko. They are followed by Dutch sailor Casper Bouman and Polish competitor Przemyslaw Miarczynski.
In the women category, Marina Alabau from Spain– the class world leader- was first in her group and French sailor Charline Picon was also the winner of the other group. They are followed by Barbara Kendal from New Zealand and Polish competitor Zofia Klepacka.
In Yngling, with venue at Real Club Náutico de Palma, Russian team Anna Basalkina/Vladislava Ukraintseva/Ekaterina Maximov, third in the ISAF world ranking list, are up to first place in the overall standings. German team Ulrike Schuemann/Julia Bleck/Ute Hoepfner -the class world leaders- are second at only one point. Third place, at two point difference, is for British team Shirley Robertson/Annie Lush/Lucy McGregor.
One race was sailed in Laser Standard, based at Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa. Argentinian sailor Julio Alzogaray is first overall followed in second place by Swiss sailor Max Bulley. Third place is for US sailor Brad Funk.
Invited class Dragon, with the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía – Mapfre preceding the Gold Cup, to be held next week at Real Club Náutico de Palma, had its debut today and sailed only one race. The winner was German team Thomas Mueller/Vincent Hoesch/Max Scheibm followed by Hans Werner Zachariassen/Michael Kurtz/Peter Eckart.
Starting at 12:00hrs, three races are scheduled tomorrow.
