ROTA, BAY OF CADIZ, SPAIN -3PM--(19-9-2003) Racing gets even more exciting on the second day of qualifiers here at the 470 Worlds Championship on the Bay of Cadiz off Rota.
Circumstances are similar to yesterday with ES winds of 12-14 knots.
In race three of Women Group A Jenny ARMSTRONG /. Belina STOWELL (AUS) managed to stay in front of Sofia BEKATOROU / Emilia TSOULFA (GRE).
Little hope there was that the groups would be remixed to have the first battle of the winners of yesterday. Nevertheless, it seems the Australian women have repositioned themselves .
In group B Denmark's Susanne WARD / Michaela WARD won race three in Group B, followed by Ingrid PETITJEAN / Nadege DOUROUX (FRA) and Christina BASSADONE / Catherine HOPSON (GBR)
This means that in a very early stage of this Championship, all Top World Ranked Ladies come together for close racing in a great battle. Looking at the results per Group, the French Women will 2nd after Title defenders from Greece.
In Group A of the Men, results just came in. MARINHO/NUNES from Portugal were first, followed by Italy's ZANDONA/TRANI and Brazil's PARADEDA/ARNDT. The Men from Portugal requested a redress yesterday because they had the opinion they had disadvantage of a jury boat in their way. The redress was not granted.
In Group B Nathan WILMOT / Malcolm PAGE have won race 3, which compensates their average of yesterday. Sweden's Johan MOLUND / Martin ANDERSON in 2nd position. The Swedish Men have their first and only discard through a lost protest for breaking rule RRS 10 yesterday . As the Swedish guys are one of the favorites for this championship, this DSQ comes in quite unfortunate. Benjamin BONNAUD / Romain BONNAUD came in 3rd.
In Group C Israel's Gidon KLIGER / Ehud GAL finished 1st, followed by Gildas Philippe / Nicholas LEBERRE from France and Title defenders Simon COOKE / Peter Nicholas from New Zealand. Remarkable in a positive way is the performance of the Danish Crew Kristian KJAERGAARD/ Mads Moeller, who sailed a 1st and 16th position yesterday, and now come in as 4th.
Just like as in the Women's Fleet, the puzzle for composition of the Gold Fleet seems to get together.
The 470 Men were just about to start the second race for today (race 4). Strong winds are coming up and the race has been `stopped`. No information yet if further racing for today has been cancelled or postponed.
A daily wrap will follow this evening.
