1st QUILMES Mercosur Cup - Dying winds |
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA-(10-10-2004) The Quilmes Mercosur Cup yesterday after seeing good weather (windy and sunny) for at least a week had to start with a stationary cold front who dropped the temperature to same level as winter and almost no wind.
Two races were raced in this condition with a wind coming at the start of the first race from the South with 4 to 8 knots, varying in shifts of 15 degrees what made it really difficult even for te top sailors.
The first regatta was won by team Pasta Achuta with Busch / Noceti / Furtado (ARG 34) followed by ARG 18 with Noceti / Rocha / Guerrero and the surprise of the day ARG 31 with Carlos Gozzi / Naveira / Lasheras .
The second race started with same wind and dying and had then many course changes after a 20 min of complete no wind or at least a erratic low one in some parts of the course. The Surprise were the veteran sailor (RA 8) Fernando Marreins with Ramayon and Blacksley who rouded the first and second mark firsts keeping the good performance till the end who saw a terrific recovery from the current world champion ARG 32 Warburg / Tuffarolo / Smith who coming from the back finished first followed by ARG 18 , ARG 31 and RA 8.
The American team USA 807 Collins / Escurra / Muller had a good first race rounding the mark fourth but then finishing fifth, they were happy knowing the boat had good although sailing one of the oldest solings in race actually (Selcoat 142) speed the only failed to choose the corners. Second race they were 5th but again choosing the left side made them finish 8th,
The Quilmes Mercosur Cup is held by the Club Nautico San Isidro who is also hosting the Optimist South American Selection for Argentina and now is living a tremendous party crowded by the young sailors and the most experienced ones in the Soling class.
