Current Australian Champion takes the gun in Heat 3 of 18 Footer Australian Championships.

18 Footer Australian Championships - Current Australian Champion takes the gun in Heat 3 of 18 Footer Australian Championships.
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA-(2-3-2003) Defending champion John Harris and crew Craig Ferris and Chris Cleary on Rag & Famish Hotel crossed the line in first position in heat 3 of the championship series. Heat 3 was sailed in a light south-east wind on Sydney harbour. Grant Rollerson and crew Paul Williams and Greg on Fisher and Paykel took second position by a 1 min 32 sec margin with current NSW Champion Tony Hannan and crew Greg Windust and Cameron McDonald on Total Recall finishing third by a 1 second margin.

Conditions on the harbour during the race were very shifty with the wind strength softening during the course of the race. Series leader Express Post and second placed Casio Seapathfinder going into Heat 3 were well back in the pack and finished mid fleet.

Former Australian Champion, Trevor Barnabas, continued to have a miserable series, finishing only 10th after Daily Telegraph's spinnaker tangled with Omega Smeg when Daily Telegraph capsized at the leeward mark.

Racing in the Australian Championships will continue with Heat 4 on March 9th with the spectator ferry following the action. The ferry will leave Double Bay wharf at 2:15pm.
