JP Morgan Regatta - Weapon leads the charge in the Farr 40's at the JP Morgan regatta |
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA-(29-11-2003) Rob Skinner's Weapon is in a commanding position with a first and second after day one of racing in the Farr 40 OD class at the JP Morgan regatta on Sydney Harbour today. The 10 boat fleet raced inside the harbour in a building nor' East breeze that reached 20 knots.
With a course that was set around the harbour the first race of the day was won easily by Pittwater skipper Steve Ellis on Buon Giorno. After gaining a good lead over the fleet Ellis crossed the line a minute and a half in front of Weapon, with Marcus Blackmore on Emotional Hooligan crossing 11 seconds behind to take third place.
Race two had the fleet weaving its way through the usual Saturday Sydney Harbour traffic down to Clarke Island, which was make or break point for a lot of the fleet with tactics playing a big part at this mark. The crew on Weapon worked their way back from fourth at Clarke Island to take the gun with Blackmore's Emotional Hooligan on their heals and Lang Walker on Kokomo taking third. The top three boats finished within 30 seconds of each other in this close one design racing.
Richard Perini's Corinthian Doors charged the line in race two only to be over and had to go back and restart, but they sailed well to manoeuvre themselves back into sixth position. Racing continues tomorrow for all the fleets in the JP Morgan regatta. Results for other classes can be seen on www.sail-world.com
