| MOSCOW, RUSSIA-(24-11-2003) For the first time in the history of Russian sailing, an Olympic class World Championship will be held in Moscow, on the Reservoir at Kliazma 40 kilometres outside the city centre.
World Championships have been held before in the old Soviet Union (in Estonia), but this will be the first time for Russia. The initiative came from the Moscow sailing centre run by Alexsei FOMIN, who has been working hard over the last few years to relaunch Russian sailing.
Fomin successfully bid for the 49er Worlds against other strong contenders such as Australia, Italy, Hungary, Holland and Denmark. The organising committee have received significant support from the Moscow city hall and in particular from the Mayor Mr Luzhkov.
Alexei Fomin hopes to organize a top-level event that will be regarded as one of the best 49er World Championship ever. The organisers will arrange centralised accommodation, charter flights and equipment transfers as well as top class race management and of course traditional Russian hospitality.
This initiative will bring the Moscow Sailing centre onto the world stage and will be the start of a campaign to help bring the 2012 Olympics to Moscow.
