470 World Championship - Practice race preparation |
HAYLING ISLAND, UNITED KINGDOM-(18-7-2003) With measurement now in its final stages, the teams are in full preparation for the main event. 146 boats are competing for the honours this year. 86 boats have entered for the Open and 60 boats for the Ladies Championship from a total of 20 countries.
Organisation is now in full swing and the teams have found plenty to occupy them between measurement and setting up their boats. The local supermarkets are now completely devoid of bottled water and bread (Tesco have had to add an extra delivery each day!) and many sailors and supporting crew are now sporting event clothing. (Merchandise can be bought at the event or through the link from this website.)
Yesterday saw some of the teams going out to practice, but a gusting force 5 saw 3 bent masts in the GBR team (a result of capsizing too close to the sand bar) which made a number of other teams very glad that they hadn't ventured out!
After yesterday's wet and windy weather, today's damp grey start promised another typical British day, but now the sun is beginning to peek through the clouds and the wind is a fresh force 3-4.
The practice race starts at 1pm and so launching is currently well under way. Flights have been allocated in the men's event and the practice will allow the competitors to test the water and give the race team a chance to try out the system.
Results of the practice race will be available on this website later today and results and reports will be uploaded throughout racing. Each race result will be uploaded as soon as we can manage after each race and, when possible, we will offer 'first round the mark' news flashes.
