AUCKLAND, NZL-(12-12-2002) Race three of the Louis Vuitton Cup Semi-Finals got underway on time today with winds ranging from 14-16 knots and rough seas. The conditions provided for another day of exciting racing, with lead changes and a penalty adding to the excitement on the race course.
OneWorld and Luna Rossa came off the starting line with OneWorld having the starboard advantage. The pair of boats sailed up the first beat, OneWorld protecting the right and using its advantage to luff Prada at the first mark to round with a delta of 10 seconds. On the first run, the two boats exchanged leads but OneWorld regained control and Luna Rossa was penalized when they sailed above its proper course. Prada was red flagged for the penalty and forced to immediately complete a 270-degree penalty turn. In the meantime, OneWorld recovered the lead and took control of the race staying between the opponent and the pin, leading around the mark by 51 seconds. For the remainder of the race OneWorld held its position, covered the opponent and finished 33 seconds ahead of Prada.
