GrandOptical Team Racing Cup - Russians win GrandOptical |
LAGO DI LEDRO, ITALY-(31-8-2002) The Russian team from YC Taganrog on the Black Sea won the first
GrandOptical Team Racing Cup for European club teams.
In a very exciting semi-final Taganrog beat Hoorn (NED) 2-0 while YC Split
(SLO) beat the Royal Lymington (GBR) 2-1.
In the final the Russians beat Split and in the petit final Hoorn beat the
Royal Lymington, both 2-0.
But the real winner was the sport of sailing. This event, reviving the old
tradition of international inter-club competition, will be a major stimulus
to inter-club racing at home.
GrandOptical sponsorship is guaranteed through 2004. The event will
continue to be limited to sixteen teams which must be made up of genuine
club members and must have won a national team-racing championship. With
free entry, accommodation and charter, plus prizes including four new
boats, plus the sheer beauty and warmth of the Ledro valley, competition to
qualify for next year's event will be a real boost to club sailing.
