CADIZ, SPAIN-(20-4-2003) The two races held today brought the Spanish Cup for the Optimist class to an end. Over a hundred sailors have taken part in this competition held in the Bay of Cadiz over the last weekend and which has been organised by the Mundo Vela Provincial Consortium and the Spanish and Andalusian Sailing Federations, with the help of the National Secretary for the Optimist class.
Racing on the last day began just after midday, following a short postponement at sea while the Race Committee waited for the sea breeze to kick in. The Cup finished on a high note with a brilliant sunny day, accompanied by the westerly sea breeze (“Poniente”), which increased in intensity from 5/6 knots to 8/10 knots during the last race of the day.
Not even the most optimistic forecasts had indicated that such a packed schedule could be followed, but thanks to the excellent conditions in the Bay of Cadiz, racing took place throughout the three days according to the schedule set out in the Notice of Race. The various groups took part in nine races to choose the new winner of the Spanish cup from among the high level of entries from the 19 regional federations. Sailors from the Canary Island federation took the top two positions, followed by excellent performances from the Valencia, Andalusian and Balearic Island Federations.
This race has been yet another opportunity for the various committees on the water and on shore to get ready for the 2003 ISAF World Sailing Championships, to be held in the Bay from the 11th to the 25th September.
