IODA North American Championship - Bermuda gains the Optimist Gold
KEMAH, TX. USA-(6-7-2004) Elijah Simmons gained gold for Bermuda for their third year in succession with a convincing 3rd place in the final race. U.S.A. challenger Austen Anderson from Centerpoint Y.C. on Long Island NY sailed a discard but was still far enough ahead to take silver ahead of Stephanie Roble (Lake Beulah Y.C. WI) and reigning champion Sean Bouchard (BER).

Among the girls Haruka Komiya (JPN) and last year's best girl Susannah Pyatt (NZL) took the minor open medals ahead of North American medallists Amanda Johnson (USA) and Eleanor Gardner (BER).

The organisers' website is at www.tcyc.org/home/2004OptiNAHome.htm but problems accessing it are reported and results are mirrored at www.optiworld.org/04nams.pdf Team Racing

In a first round shock second seeds Mexico went our after losses to Canada, USA 2 and USA 3. Almost as surpising was the second round elimination of Argentina and Brasil by the unfancied USA 3 team.

In the semi-finals top seeds Bermuda beat Japan 2-0 and USA 3 beat USA 1 by 2-1, and in the finals Bermuda beat USA 3 while USA 1 beat Japan for third place. The outcome was therefore:
1. Bermuda 2. USA 3
3. USA 1
4. Japan
