Greece leads after day two

International Easter Optimist Regatta - Greece leads after day two
ROELOFARENDSVEEN, NETHERLANDS-(27-3-2005) As in former years, this time about 270 young sailors from 13 countries are competing fiercely to win this prestigious event. The International Easter Optimist Regatta began in 1986 with 75 competitors from mostly the Nordic countries. It gave them a chance to compete in the spring while their homeports were still iced up. Most countries now have selection rounds to see who is good enough to compete. Like last three years, even competitors from the United States of America are here to race and this year we also welcome sailors from Malta, Greece and the Dutch Antilles!

Our second day:
Both scheduled races of today have been finished and all day wind has been around 7 knots from easterly directions. All morning starts had one general recall after which the fleet went away okay except for a few black flags. Between the two races all sailors went ashore for a short lunch break. At 13:30hrs we had the start for race five which again had some general recalls but then good starts with another few black flags. Today's races were sailed in the orange Magic Marine race leader jackets by Carl Strombeck and Afrodite Kyranakou, the best boy and girl of Saturday's races. Most of the day there were sunny spells but at the end of the last race some rain came. Monday has two final races scheduled with the fleet divided in Gold (place 1-90), Silver (place 91-180) and Bronze (181->). The first race will start at 10:00hrs. Please check out the event website www.braassemermeer.nl for preliminary results.

Yacht club Braassemermeer (Roelofarendsveen) is a Yacht club with a keen interest in training and racing both nationally and internationally. The 87-year-old club has about 900 members (some of them even winners of the Volvo Ocean Race and the America’s Cup) and excellent facilities like a splendid clubhouse with a grand view over the lake and a modern harbour equipped with all means necessary. In July 2005 YC Braassemermeer will organise the J/22 Worlds (on the IJsselmeer, off Medemblik). More information about the Yacht club and the event can be found at www.braassemermeer.nl

Magic Marine, Print Productions Scheveningen, De Skihut, Klaas de Jong Opblaasboten and van Wettum Boats sponsor the 20th International Easter Optimist Regatta.
