SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA-(22-12-2003) The Sydney 38, Dodo, skippered by leading Sydney 18-foot skiff skipper Adrian Dunphy, is one of several of these one-design boats emerging as a contenders for handicap honours in this week’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
Dunphy has campaigned in one-design keel-boat classes internationally, as well as being a former world champion windsurfer. He has competed in three previous Sydney Hobarts
Dodo is one of six Sydney 38s in this year’s race, the crew including Barry and Toby Munns, who have been part of the winning Sydney 38 Australian championship crew for two years running.
Adrian Dunphy is representing Australia’s oldest open-boat sailing club, the Sydney Flying Squadron in the 59th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
Highly experienced ocean racing skippers Lou Abrahams and Bruce Taylor, both from Melbourne, must also be considered strong IMS overall prospects.
Abrahams is back again with his Sydney 38, Another Challenge, for his 41st Hobart Race following a third overall last year, while Taylor is campaigning Chutzpah following a highly successful winter series in Melbourne.
Asylum, skippered by Wayne Kirkpatrick, CEO of Hamilton Island Resort has a top crew that includes New Zealander Murray Spence who was sailing master of line honours winner Alfa Romeo in the 2002 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
Other NSW Sydney 38s competing this year are Obsession (Scott Wheelhouse, Mark Hunter and Stephen Roach) and Team Lexus, skippered by former dinghy sailor Rupert Henry, whose crew includes his father, David, and another father and son(s) combination of Rob, Will and Richard Howard. Also in the crew is former Etchells champion Jan ‘Clogs’ Sholten.
