TAVIRA, PORTUGAL-(27-8-2002) This Wednesday it starts the World Championship of Class Flying Dutchman, an event that will take place until the 3rd of September under the aegis of the Clube Náutico de Tavira and the International Flying Dutchman Class Organization.
This “International Flying Dutchman Open World Championship” counts with 75 boats in a total of 150 sailors will the Clube Náutico de Tavira fulfill the last grand international competition, after the World Championship of Class 420 and the Optimist European.
The 28th of August will be spent in measurement and weighting of the boats attending the Championship, and the training race there will also be performed, with the take-off foreseen for 14 hours.
On Thursday, the 29th, it will take place the formal take-off, with the fulfillment of the two first races beginning at 14 hours.
This world championship program regards the fulfillment of 9 races, nevertheless there won’t be allowed more than 2 races a day. The Championship is validated with 3 races, in case there will be 5 or more races, the worst result will be discarded.
There will be present some strong crews like the German team Hans Peter Schwarz / Roland Kist winner of the World Cup, the Dutchmen Bas van Der Pol/Marc van Der Pol – 6th position and Enno Kramer / Ard Geelkerken also representing Netherlands on the 15th position.
Portugal has two crews João Lapa/José Luís Lopes and Frederico Baptista/Rafael Paraíso.
We must point out that Paulo Paraíso and José Massapina, who are nowadays managers of the Clube Náutico de Tavira, used to be a team in this class that served as a preparation for the Olympic Games in Barcelona. Therefore they are ”experts” of the Class Flying Dutchman. (Note: on the 28th it will be sent to all the Press reporters the photographs and interview with Paulo Paraíso and José Massapina).
