Hungarian team wins the 1st race Portuguese Team on the 15th position

FD World Championship 2002 - Hungarian team wins the 1st race Portuguese Team on the 15th position
TAVIRA, PORTUGAL-(29-8-2002)

The wind was blowing gentle from the South but even so the sailors of Class Flying Dutchman were able to accomplish a race in the shape of a trapezium.

The Hungarian team Szabolcs Majthenyi/Andras Domokos was the first one to reach the arrival line. These competitors had a good take-off and were able to separate themselves from the rest of the fleet, went around the buoys in the first position and were the winners.

....” We had some luck, the wind was blowing weak but we were able to maintain the sailing course. We chose the right tacks and ended up by winning the race”, declared Andras Domokos

The Spanish sailors Francisco Martinez/José Rodenas although they didn’t have a good take-off they managed to recover some positions throughout the course and that lead them to the second position.

The Australians tri-champions of the World Ian Mc Crossin / James Cook ended up in the 3rd position.

Representing the Clube Náutico de Tavira we have the Portuguese crew Frederico Baptista / Rafael Paraíso, two young men who were able to go around the bowline buoy in the 12th position and nevertheless the lack of wind they were able to reach the arrival line on the 15th position.

....”It was a rough race, the wind was weak and it was complicated to choose the right tacks. Anyway, we consider that a 15th position is a reasonable one considering that we are racing against sailors with world and European titles”, declared Frederico Baptista.

...”I like staying hanged, to be in the trapezium, feel the water on the body, but today the wind was so weak and didn’t allow great maneuvers”.. added Rafael Paraíso.

The only feminine crew attending this World Championship – the German Elisa Koenig / Julia Weissbach are on the 16th position.

We remind you that the Flying Dutchman is one of the fastest boats of the moment, although the 2002 celebration of it’s 50 years of existence. The relation between the sail area and the weight is so greatly balanced that it becomes a boat that sails with all kind of wind, yet, if the wind is blowing hard it allows images of great beauty.

In this World Championship in Tavira, an event organized by the Clube Náutico participates 49 boats, in a total of 98 sailors from all over the world like Australia, New Zeeland, United States and a big German, Dutch and German fleet.

Tomorrow two more races are fixed, with the take-off foreseen for 14h00.
