| TAVIRA, PORTUGAL-(31-8-2002) The Hungarian team Szabolcs Majthenyi / Andras Domokos still leaders the World Championship of Class Flying Dutchman. The two sailors achieved the 4th position on the first race of the day, a race that was accomplished with a gentle breeze blowing from South. On the second race the wind was weak still blowing from the same quadrant and the Hungarian team reached the arrival line on the 1st position. On the 3rd race with the wind already blowing strong from Southwest these same sailors reached the 2nd position, right behind the Italian Cipriani/Morelli. Therefore after 4 races the Hungarian crew leaders the World Championship of Flying.
We remind you that the Hungarian sailors were the World champions in 1993 in Australia, for three times they were leaders of the European Championship and for 10 years now that they stand in their national podium on the 1st position. But none of these athletes is a professional one. Concerning Szabolcs he has a degree in the sport branch while Andras is a commercial pilot. They are both 31 years old.
...“The races were great today, with good winds, specially the two last races. We enjoy medium or strong winds. The fleet is a balanced one and the courses it takes forces us to be careful even when we are on the front of the race” - declared Andras.
The winners of the first race of the day, accomplished with gentle breeze, was the German crew Hans Peter Scwarz / Roland Kirst that were already World Champions. Followed by another German team Hans Genthe / Hauke Drengenberg while in the 3rd position stood the Dutchmen Klaas Tilstra / Adriaan Schmal. In this race the Spanish José and Nicolas Esteras turned over their boat in a maneuver and lost some fleet positions. In what concerns the Portuguese team Rafael Paraíso / Frederico Baptista they arrived on the 37th position.
...”We don’t know the boat very well, we have to take more chances when taking-off. Anyway we have some weighting problems when the wind gets strong. This race had a long course and sometimes the wind changed suddenly which harmed our sailing” – declared Rafael.
The second take—off of the day was cancelled for lack of wind and the sailors waited, for about one hour, for the southwest to appear. In this race a major part of the sailors chose a land tack. The winners were the Hungarian crew followed by Roberto Cipriani /Stefano Morelli. In the 3rd position stood the sailors from New Zealand Hideo Tayama / Scott Francis. In this race the Portuguese team reached the 16th position.
The third race of the day, the one that validates this World Championship, was accomplished already at noon and with a strong wind. This race’s winner was the Italian team Roberto Cipriani / Stefano Morelli. The Hungarian sailors although they didn’t have a good take-off on the second part of the course, they were able to regain 4 positions and reached the arrival on the second position. Klaas and Adrian were the Dutchmen on the 3rd position.
Analyzing the gained points, at the moment the Hungarian crew leaders with 8 points followed by the Italian one, Roberto /Stephano. On the third place stands Hans Peter /Roland. The Portuguese team stands in the 21st position.
Tomorrow is the resting day; the crews attending this Championship will visit some places in Algarve. Monday 2nd of September, the sailors will fulfill two more races with the take-off foreseen for 12h00.
