Volvo Ocean Race - Double victory for ABN AMRO |
CAPETOWN, SOUTH AFRICA-(2-12-2005) Six hours, 32 minutes, 32 seconds behind her team sister, ABN AMRO TWO slowly wafted across the finish line off Cape Town in second place to make the first part of the Volvo Ocean Race an ABN AMRO benefit.
Sibling rivalry and competitive instinct do not exist in the ABN house – well, not after the finish - and as the younger of their twins sailed between the harbour wall and the port authority control tower and the gun went at 1956:34GMT, Mike Sanderson and his crew had sacrificed their own celebration time to join the back slapping parade aboard ABN AMRO TWO.
They look tired, but the youthful enthusiasm of the kids - maybe a reason in itself as to why they have felled such experienced opposition - permitted them to wave franticly at the waiting supporters on the pontoon. How steep has the learning curve been? We will soon find out, but judging from the fresh beards on a few of the youngsters it has been quite a ride.
Second place from Sebastien Josse’s crew has cemented the hold that the ABN AMRO team and designer Juan Kouyoumdjian have got on the first leg of the race. Certainly that haven’t had it all their own way, but they have been the most reliable and in the winds, the fastest of the boats.
Just five boats have made it on their own bottoms to Cape Town, but for the next leg all seven Volvo Open 70s will be on the line raring to go and with something to prove. Before that the inshore race too, but first things first, for ABN AMRO TWO the pleasures of shore and a celebration of a great double triumph for the team.
