DARWIN, NT, AUSTRALIA-(28-4-2003) Gary Martin, the Northern Territory Yachting Association President, today confirmed that the Laser Asian Pacific Championship to be conducted from 15 to 23 May 2003 would go ahead as planned. The Championship, the most important Laser event in the Asian Pacific region, was to be combined with the Arafura Games, however due to lack of confirmed competitors for a number of sports the NT Government has cancelled the Games for 2003.
Gary Martin said that the overwhelming desire form sailors to come to Darwin and the continued support from sponsors has confirmed that the Championship will be a success. In a speech at the Darwin Sailing Club Open Day on Saturday the NT Chief Minister, Clare Martin confirmed the Government is pleased to see events of this level conducted in the NT.
