Laser Asia Pacific Championships - Kevin Lim from Malay retains the lead in Laser Standard |
DARWIN, NT, AUSTRALIA-(21-5-2003) Some unusual weather on Tuesday carried through to today's racing. Winds, a generous description, were light and varied. The 1000 start was postponed for about 20 minutes as the course was adjusted for a persistent change in wind direction. In Race 7, the Full Rigs got off to a clean start. However, the Radials registered the first premature starter for the regatta, Katherine Wade from NSW who actually crossed the line first! (sorry Katherine, but as it was the first for the regatta it had to be mentioned!). The light winds and the ever present tide made for difficult conditions and the race was shortened as the sea breeze began to arrive. Race 8 was delayed for about an hour and a half as the sea breeze settled in. Much frolicking and frivolity was enjoyed by some of the younger sailors. This included capsizes, boats sailing off without their skippers, gibing by walking around the stern or tacking by walking around the bow or just plain swimming. Race 8 was started and again the Full Rigs got off to a clean start (repeat the full rigs had a clean start!). The Radials, following Katherine's lead had a general recall. Despite the recall, the second start in the Radials saw two boats over the start line early. At the end of the day, Kevin Lim from Malay retained the lead in the Full Rigs. Hiromitsu Eiraku from Japan continues his lead in the Radials. Jan Kemp (winning both Race 7 & 8) moves into the lead in the Women's Radial. For more results click here.
