ATHENS-(16-8-2002) Nonika Oikonomopoulou climbed to the top of the general listings in the Europe class at the end of today’s second session, in the pre-Olympic test event taking place at Agios Kosmas. She started off in fourth place in the first race, but took fourth place in the second race, a result which catapulted her to the top. “I certainly made a good start,” she said. “I hope to continue in the same way. I tried very hard when the wind fell and changed course”.
Virginia Kravarioti, another Greek woman champion, holds second place, followed by two athletes from France -- Brain and Borsi. And fierce competition continues in the men’s Mistral class. Nikos Kaklamanakis of Greece, the Atlanta Olympic Games gold medallist, holds second place with 8 points, the same number of points as Tobin of New Zealand who still leads the running. Kaklamanakis took 5th place in the second race.
The Greek crew of Dimitra Milona and Aliki Kourkoulou hold second place in the 470 class for women. “In the second race we finished in 5th place and therefore improved on the 8th position we held at the start. Of course, it is much too early to make predictions, but we will try for the best possible position. In these games the very best athletes are competing in this particular class, while the facilities are also better than we expected”. The crew of Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa finished 15th in the second race and are therefore in 5th place in the general standings.
Also in second place, in the men’s 470 class, are the crew of Panagiotis Kambouridis and Aggelos Lemanis, who crossed the finishing line first in this second race. “We are a new and young crew which has made an unbelievably good start. We hope to continue so”.
JIAN Yin from China leads the standings in the Mistral class for women, as the American crew does in the Yngling class.
Tomorrow, starting at 12 noon, the races will commence in the men and women’s Mistral class (3rd race), the 49er (1st), the 470 class for men and women (3s race), the Tornado (1st), the Finn (1st), and Yngling (3rd race).
