Athens 2002 Regatta - 2nd Day`s report of Athens 2002 Regatta`s 1st races |
ATHENS-(17-8-2002) Nikos Kaklamanakis, Greece's gold medallist at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, took first place and climbed to the top of the general standings in the Mistral class following an impressive performance today at the Sailing Test Event, which is continuing at the Agios Kosmas Olympic venue. In the first three races, the Olympic gold medallist has finished 3rd, 5th and 1st respectively and is leading the standings with 9 penalty points compared to 12 of Israel’s Gal Fridman and 14 of the Ukranian Maxim Oberemko. The race was thrilling and was decided in the last lap when Kaklamanakis overtook New Zealand's James Wells.
`Today you were in great form`, Wells told Kaklamanakis, who returned the compliment by stating: `Yesterday was your day, today is mine`.
As to developments in the women's 470 class, Greece’s Dimitra Milona and Aliki Kourkoulou are leading the standings with 15 p.p. after the third session. The Greek crew came 2nd in the third race, where first place was taken by European champions (last week in Tallinn) Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa, who are third in the general standings.
In the 470 men's class, Greece’s Panagiotis Kambouridis and Aggelos Lemanis climbed to first place in the general standings after the third session. In this third race, first place was taken by former world champions (Toronto 1995) and former runner-up European champions (Tallinn 2002) Andreas Kosmatopoulos and Kostas Trigonis, who are now in 7th place in the general standings.
In the first Tornado class, the races of which started today, Dimitris Theodorakis and Antonis Bougiouris took 5th place.
