Tsoulfa and Bekatorou strike gold in the 470s! at Athens 2002 Regatta

Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa, Greece`s twin `golden` team in the 470 class
Athens 2002 Regatta - Tsoulfa and Bekatorou strike gold in the 470s! at Athens 2002 Regatta
ATHENS, GREECE-(20-8-2002) Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa, Greece's twin 'golden' team in the 470 class, is continuing to impress at the pre-Olympic Sailing Test Event at Agios Kosmas. They are in first place following today's 7th session and have increased their lead over the other crews.

In the 470 men`s class, Andreas Kosmatopoulos and Kostas Trigonis moved up to 3rd place in the general standings. They ended 4th in the 7th session, and in the 8th they were disqualified due to a false start. `This creates problems for us and we must be particularly careful in the three remaining races`, they said. `Top athletes in this class are participating, and the racing area has everything necessary to host the Olympic Games`. Sven Coster and Kalle Coster of Holland came 1st in both races of the day, but in the general standings the lead is held by Johan Molund and Martin Andersson of Sweden.

Nikos Kaklamanakis of Greece, the gold medallist at the Atlanta Olympic Games, is still leading in the Mistral class. He is followed 11 points behind by New Zealander Tobin Jon-Paul, who came in first in today`s 8th session.

The Finn class continues to be dominated by Benn Ainslie of Britain, who became both World and European Champion in 2002. In the 49er class, after the 7th session, the lead is held by the crew from Norway, Christoffer Sundby and Frode Bovim.
A major battle continues in the Tornado class Where Austrians Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher are just one point ahead of the French crew, Olivier Backes and Laurent Voiron. In 6th place are Iordanis Paschalides and Christos Garefis of Greece. `We are very pleased with our performance`, they said. `We have been working in this class since 1988, we did not succeed in qualifying for the Olympic Games in Sydney, so our goal is to secure a place in the eight for the 2004 Games in Athens`.

In the new Olympic class, the Yngling, after the 7th session, the lead is held by the American crew Hannah Swett – Joan Touchette – Melissa Purdy.
