Fourth day of the Races, with the wind as ally at Athens 2002 Regatta

PRESS AND MEDIA OFFICE - Fourth day of the Races, with the wind as ally at Athens 2002 Regatta
ATHENS, GREECE-(19-8-2002) After yesterday's unexpected rainstorm in Agios Kosmas, today the weather conditions were good for the athletes on Day 4 of the ”ATHENS 2002 Regatta”. Overall, there were a total of 22 races in all classes.
Sofia Bekatorou and Aimilia Tsoulfa achieved once more impressive results, by taking 1st place in both races in the women’s 470 class and increasing their lead in the general standings. Bekatorou stated, “We managed to improve our start and I believe we are coming forth well” while Tsoulfa added, “we will not relax because of our successful performance to date. Next month are the World Championships in Sardinia.”

Australians Jenny Armstrong and Belinda Stowell, who won the gold medal at the Sydney Games, are also competing in the women's 470 class: `The conditions prevailing at sea are similar to those we have in Sydney. The event is proving a pleasant surprise for us, the facilities are excellent and fully functional, the personnel and volunteers are very polite and friendly and help us under all circumstances`.

In the men's 470 class, Andreas Kosmatopoulos and Kostas Trigonis are in 6th place in the general standings, while in 1st place is the crew from Sweden, Johan Molund and Martin Andersson.

The Sydney gold medallist in the Laser class, Benn Ainslie of Britain, who now participates in the Finn class, is leading the general standings with a margin of 5 penalty points. As he stated: `It is a year which is going just as I had planned. Today the entire British team distinguished itself, since in my class first place was taken by my compatriot, Andrew Simpson.”
